We hope that this page will provide you with some ideas and information for your science or English lessons on the beautiful birds of Eritrea. There are two lesson activities below. The first is in English and is designed for Junior School students. The second is in Tigrinya and is designed for Elementary School Students. If you are lucky enough to have internet access at your school, you can use the page online. If not, you can always save it to disk or flash drive and then save it to the computers in your computer lab for the children to use there. Alternatively, print and copy it onto a poster!

Junior School Lesson

The mountains in Eritrea and Ethiopia are called the Abyssinian Highlands. Over millions of years, new species of birds have evolved here that are unique to the Abyssinian Highlands. Read the 4 description of the birds and match them to the 4 photos.

1 Black-winged Lovebird

This is a beautiful, small green bird, which is related to the parrots. It has a red beak, and the male has a red forehead. It lives in native tree species in the highlands from Asmara to Senafe. It is called the lovebird because the male and female are always together!

2 Wattled Ibis

This is a big, dark brown bird with a long, curved beak. It has a white patch on each wing and flaps of skin that fall down in front of its face. It lives near water, feeding in green fields in the highlands from Serajeka to Senafe. It often calls loudly when it flies.

3 White-cheeked Turaco

This is a large green bird, with a red beak, a red eye, and two white marks on the face, one in front of the eye. It has a crest on the top of its head. It lives in native forest, and is quite common in Filfil where it eats figs and fruit and travels in parties of 3 or 4.

4 Rouget's Rail

This is a small, orange brown bird that looks a bit like a chicken. It has a big white patch under its tail and it always lives near streams and rivers in the highlands. It feeds in grassy fields, but it likes to hide in thick plants near the water. It is very shy, so you have to be very quiet if you want to see it.

እዛ ዘርኢ ናይ ፓፓጋሎ ዝኾነት ዑፍ ቀይሕ ዝሕብሩ ኣፍ ኣለዋ። ኣብ ጫፍ ናይ መንገብገባ ጸሊም ሕብሪ ኣለዋ። እቲ ተባዕታይ ኣብ ግንባሩ ቀይሕ ምልክት ኣለዎ።

ሰፈራ መብዛሕቱኡ ኣብ ገረብ ጽሕድን ቆልቆልን ዘለዎ ኣከባቢ እዩ።

እትርከበሉ ዝርግሔ ካብ ከባቢ ኣስመራ ጀሚራ ስጋብ ከባቢ ሰንዓፈ እዩ።

ፍረ ቆልቆልን ከም እውን ዝተፈላለየ ደቀቅቲ ፍረታት ይምገባ። ናይ ፍቅሪ ዑፍ ተባሂለን ዝጽውዓሉ ምኽንያት ተባዕታይን ኣንስተይትን ኣብ ኩሉ ምንቅስቃሳቶም ስለ ዘይፈላለዩ እዩ።
